Spice up the Musical Moments of Your Life
Introduction
Music is a universal language regardless of language, race, and religion. Music has a nostalgic power that brings us back to a moment in time. The lyrics often resonate with the audience. Music reminds us of the shared memories that bring family and loved ones together during special occasions. It has the therapeutic and healing power that transports us back to the good old days.
Digitalisation of Music
The digitalisation of music content has dramatically improved the music appreciation experience. The sharing economy removes barriers to entry, reduces price premiums and makes the music industry more transparent, accessible and sustainable. Music lovers are spoilt for choices.
Challenges
Growing up in an analogue world, many seniors lack intimate knowledge of digital music. There is no standardised grading system to rank the different players and platforms in terms of quality and security. In a recent survey done of my participants, the top three challenges they faced are:
· Concerns about malware and viruses;
· Trustworthiness of experts’ recommendations; and
· Limited IT skills to curate and explore on their own.
Musical Moments of Our Lives
I categorise the musical moments of our lives into four areas, namely listening, singing, jamming and producing. There are many players in all these categories that offer an app or a platform service.
1. Listening: Radio stations are available on digital platforms that can be accessed via the computer or a mobile app. YouTube Music, Spotify and Apple Music online streaming services flourish by providing different genres of music anywhere, anytime.
2. Singing: Karaoke and instrumental versions of music are available on the common music platform, whether in audio form or music video.
3. Jamming: Entertainment and enjoyment of music are possible now, as one can have a virtual orchestra with a repertoire of musical instruments.
4. Producing: One can record, edit and produce high-quality audio and videos. Music can be created on a computer using Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software. We can present and share with a worldwide audience via cloud services such as MuseScore and SoundCloud.
Dip Our Toes to Digital Music
In the last 2 years, I had been conducting over 5 workshops on music appreciation. The objectives of the workshop are to introduce digital music and provide guidance to enhance the musical moments of our lives. The participants will dip their toes into digital music and get an appreciation of the latest mobile apps.
